My lengthy career as an electrical engineer started on the tools in 1969 and developed through design and contract management to professional engineer level. It was interrupted in the nineties when I became Parliamentary Officer for the Motorcycle Action Group (MAG). Before returning to engineering, a period as a mature student led to the University of Sussex awarding me a doctorate on the subject of paternalistic legislation. Electrical engineering was going through a change as I returned: renewable energy and energy saving were the new priorities.

My experience with MAG and my career as an engineer form the background to my interests in paternalism and energy policy respectively: informed by my political qualifications.

I am currently taking a break from employment to carry out independent research and writing on my specialisms. I am a member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Energy Institute. I am also the Chair for the Energy Institute Southern Branch.
